Make and Play Mancala

Mancala is an ancient family of board games, and there are numerous variants. This is a version of the basic game, known as two-rank Mancala and also known as Kalah.

Difficulty: Average

Time Required: 15 minutes

Here’s How:
The Mancala ‘board’ is made up of two rows of six holes, or pits, each. If you don’t have a Mancala board handy, an empty egg carton is perfect.
Four pieces — marbles or stones — are placed in each of the 12 holes. The color of the pieces is irrelevant.
Each player has a ‘store’ to the right side of the Mancala board. Cereal bowls work well. for this purpose.

The game begins with one player picking up all of the pieces in any one of the holes on his side.
Moving counter-clockwise, the player deposits one of the stones in each hole until the stones run out.
If you run into your own store, deposit one piece in it. If you run into your opponent’s store, skip it.

If the last piece you drop is in your own store, you get a free turn.
If the last piece you drop is in an empty hole on your side, you capture that piece and any pieces in the hole directly opposite.

Always place all captured pieces in your store.
The game ends when all six spaces on one side of the Mancala board are empty.

The player who still has pieces on his side of the board when the game ends captures all of those pieces.
Count all the pieces in each store. The winner is the player with the most pieces.

Tips:
Planning ahead is essential to victory in board games like Mancala. Try to plan two or three moves into the future.

What You Need:
Mancala board: egg carton, scissors, tape, optional: markers to decorate
48 markers: beans, marbles, pebbles, coins, etc.

Baby Shower Clothes Pin Game

Here’s an easy, but fun game for a baby shower. I especially like it because the supplies are inexpensive: pins and a prize.

Pick up a set of clothes pins, we found a cute set of mini plastic pink and blue pins. Get enough for one per guest.

Give a pin to guests as they arrive. Have them pin it to their sleeve. Instruct them to ‘steal’ a pin from someone when they say the word BABY.

At a pre-determined time during the shower, award a prize to the guest who has the most pins collected.

Also works well for baby showers where  men are present too.

Baby Shower Memory Game

Here’s a fun activity for a baby shower. Prep is easy and will give mom to be a few nice things for baby at the end of the party.

Suggested supplies to purchase, 20-25 items: (go to the dollar store!)

  • bib
  • bottle
  • pacifier
  • onesie
  • socks
  • bottle brush
  • gift card
  • diaper rash cream
  • baby spoon
  • sippy cup
  • clothespin
  • assorted toys
  • baby tylenol
  • ipecac
  • medicine spoon
  • pacifier clip
  • rubber ducky
  • Several other small assorted new baby needs

Other supplies:

  • large tray or container
  • paper
  • pencils
  • timer
  • prize(s) for winner(s)

How to play:  Arrange all goodies onto tray. Hide tray in an unused room. When it’s party time, bring out the tray and pass around for guests to get a good look. Once everyone’s had a chance to see the tray, remove it from the room. Give guests the paper and pencils and have them list from memory the items on the tray. Bonus points question to ask: What character or design was on a specific item? (Figure this out ahead of time.) You can set a timer, and the guest with the most correct items when the buzzer goes off wins. At the end of the shower, new mom gets to take home all the goodies.

Bridal Shower TP Game

Set up: Get supplies together before hand and put into paper bags, 1 set per team.

To play: divide your guests into teams of 3 or 4. Each team picks a ‘bride’. Teams then have 15 minutes to dress their bride using supplies given. (Take pictures for posterity!)

Choosing a winner: The real bride chooses the team that came up with the creation that most closely matches her wedding gown and veil.

Supplies, per team:

  • 1 Roll Toilet Paper
  • 1 Roll Paper Towels
  • 1 Roll Tape
  • Scissors

Optional Items:

  • crepe paper in coordinating color
  • bundle of flowers for the bouquet
  • cheap plastic headband for veil

I also like to add something weird to the bag, to get guests wondering ‘what the heck is this for?’!
