Jello Surprise Bananas

How to Clone a Banana with Jello

Ingredients

  • 8 Bananas
  • 2 Boxes of Strawberry Jello Mix (approximately)

Instructions

The original recipes calls for Jello made from scratch, but if you’re short on time, try Jello mix. Follow the instructions on the box. The amount above is an estimate—you may want to buy several boxes and mix them up one box at a time to fill your desired amount of banana peels.

First, prep your banana peels. Make a precise, thin cut along one side of each of your bananas, but not all the way down. You want to create a “cup” with an open top and a sealed bottom. Carefully remove the flesh without damaging the peels—you may need to use a knife, or carefully cut the flesh in sections, or simply squeeze (carefully).

Set the intact peels aside, and use the flesh for something else. (Fruit salad? Banana peanut butter sandwich? Banana nutella crepe? It’s up to you.)

Prepare your Jello mixture: Combine the powder and water, and stir well. Now you are ready to poor the mixture into the banana peels. You will need some sort of brace to hold the bananas in place. A tall narrow glass should work just fine. Once the bananas are filled, place them in the refrigerator to cool for the amount of time indicated in your Jello mix instructions.

Rubberband Belt or Bracelet

Kids can create their own rubber band finery by simply repeating the loop knot shown below and adding beads. Wear it with a dress, jeans — or even quadruple-wrapped around a wrist or ankle as a bracelet or anklet.

Materials
  • Colorful rubber bands (we used 15 2 1/2- by 1/16-inch bands for a 30-inch-long belt)
  • Clear beads (we used 50) with a 3/16-inch or larger hole (available in multipacks at craft or bead stores)
  • 1 large bead with a 3/16-inch hole (for clasp)
  • Scissors
Instructions
  1. Rubber Band Belt - Step 1 Use a loop knot to attach 2 rubber bands.
  2. Rubber Band Belt - Step 2 Add a bead, or several, to the second band. If you like, tie spacer knots between the beads. Leave enough space at the end to attach the next band. Repeat steps 1 and 2 until the belt is the length you want.
  3. Rubber Band Belt - Step 3 To create a clasp, thread the large bead onto the last band on one end and knot it to secure. Leave the loop for decoration or cut it off. On the other end, thread a small bead onto the last band and knot it so that you have a loop that fits securely over the big bead.

Home-made Crayons

Here’s a great way to use up all those broken crayons.

1.  Preheat oven to 200°

2. Take out any broken crayons, tear of excess paper, and divide them by color. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, mix colors for fun, multi-colored crayons.

Crayon papers make great confetti

3.  Place the broken crayons in a molded, silicone tray (any shape will do).

4.  Place the silicone pan on a cookie sheet in the oven for 20 minutes or until melted.

[Note: ours took a little longer to melt, but many of our broken crayons were jumbo sized]

5.  Let the pan cool for 15 minutes and gently pop the crayons out of the tray.
